The Yankees are World Champs

The New York Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies four games to two to capture their 27th world championship. Japanese star Hidecki Matsui had a monster 6th and final game at Yankee Stadium batting in six runs with a home run, a double and a single. He was the first Japanese player ever to be awarded the World Series Most Valuable Player trophy. Other Yankee contribitors to the series victory included starting pitchers CC Sabathia and Andy Pettite, relievers Damaso Marte and Mariano Rivera and hitters Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon.

After the series the Phillies chose to pick up the contract option of pitcher Cliff Lee for 9 million. Lee had an outstanding series.
